A look at some “Queer History”
I want you guys to meet James Buchanan, our 15th President. He was president from 1857 to 1861, and the only bachelor president we ever had.
However, just because he was unmarried didn’t mean that was just unlucky with the ladies. No, no.
You see, Buchanan lived with a man named William Rufus King for 13 years, and described their relationship as “a communion.” Aaron V. Brown referred to King as Buchanan’s “better half”. James Loewen has described Buchanan and King as “siamese twins”. In later years, Kat Thompson, the wife of a cabinet member expressed her anxiety that “there was something unhealthy in the president’s attitude”
Most hilariously was “Old Hickory Andrew “I am a fucking terrible person to Native Americans” Jackson, who referred to the pair as, I am not shitting you here, "Miss Nancy and Aunt Fancy."
Upon King’s death, both men’s nieces destroyed the vast majority of the letters they had written to each other for some reason.
